Attic Living Probs

Attic Living Probs

Yeah, yeah, it's another bedroom post. I freakin' love our converted attic bedroom. I love the awesome, open stairwell that leads up to it, and I love the exposed beams that are a prominent feature of both. What I do not love is the massive amount of dust that we inherited nestled between each beam's two wooden planks. To date, we have been unable to eliminate said dust because of the narrowness of the space (even a Swiffer wouldn't fit) and the height (try hoisting a 40 pound vacuum up there). After meeting them at Alt, the folks at Shark offered me one of their Rocket vacuums to review, and I thought...heck, why not? Read on for gratuitous beam pics, a riveting dust before and after, and my initial updated thoughts on the vac.

Confession: I've only ever owned one vacuum in my adult life. It was the cheapest vacuum that Target offered, and it probably sucks (no pun intended). So I can't be comparing this vacuum to like the nicest vacs on the market, but I like it. I really do. My favorite part is how light it is. I mean, did you see my form up in the second pic...hoisting it above my head with ease and grace to get at those beams. So yeah, success, I say! And to prove it, check out this sweet side by side of my dust sitch before and after using my new vacuum. Not bad, eh?

Update! So, I've been living with this vacuum for a solid couple of months now, and I freakin' love it so much that it was absolutely necessary to update my review. I initially loved it because I could reach a few spaces that were otherwise impossible to clean. Honestly, this bad boy has sort of changed my whole cleaning life. We have hardwoods downstairs and carpet up, and I can easily use this vacuum on all surfaces. It has some of the best suction I've ever experienced, grabbing up dust bunnies (and cat hair) from every nook and cranny. With the lint brush attachment, this thing works like a dream for removing cat hair from fabric and upholstery (including curtains and bedding). I truly, seriously love this vacuum, and couldn't possibly recommend it any more highly.

Got any vacuum and/or cleaning recommendations? Not exactly my favorite task, but I'm all ears.

Disclosure: I was given a Shark Rocket vacuum to review. All opinions are my own.

  1. Vacuums are hard. After a Eureka that caught on fire, I have a Hoover Windtunnel that I use on the carpet, and it has been sucking four years strong. Unfortunately, it's super heavy, and trying to vacuum the stairs with it is just torture. Having hardwoods and high vent returns means that I'm constantly on the lookout for lightweight, bagless vacuums with attachments that will reach to the far corners of the ceilings: I have yet to find one I'm willing to purchase. Shark has gained quite the reputation, so thanks to you, I may have to try this out.

  3. Did my previous comment publish? I'll go with no... I'm still working with my first adult vaccuum cleaner 8 years on, and it still sux, but does not suck. One day I truly hope to purchase an adult version.
Love the room btw! Little bit jealous :)
