Try This: Double Surprise Halloween Cider Mugs

Fabric Paper Glue | Double Surprise Cider Mugs

Halloween is just a few days away, and despite the fact that I've dedicated less time than ever to think about or prepare for it, I might be more excited than ever. You see, this year holds the promise of real live trick-or-treaters, something I've never had before. I grew up in the country where trick-or-treaters made no sense, and for the last 12 years, I have lived in apartment/condo/dorm buildings devoid of children. So, yeah, excitement. In an effort to get myself even more motivated for the season, I'm sharing an easy three-step tutorial today that uses some Martha Stewart Decoupage products to create a set of cider mugs with a double surprise -- perfect for Halloween! Read on for the full step-by-step and more pics.

Supplies: Martha Stewart Matte Finish Decoupage, Martha Stewart Glow-in-the-Dark Finish Decoupage, Martha Stewart Decoupage Paper or other spooky graphics, Large Clear Glass Cider Mugs, Circle Punch or Scissors, Paint Brush, Straw or Stick

All of the Martha Stewart Decoupage products are available at Michaels, and I picked up these oversized glass mugs from my local dollar store.

Begin by cutting out a spooky image the same size as the bottom of your mug. I lucked out and happened to have a circle punch just the right size, but a set of scissors will do just fine too.

Next, use the Martha Stewart Matte Finish and a paint brush to affix a cut-out to the bottom of a mug. Apply a thin layer of the finish onto the mug's bottom, place the image face up towards the inside of the mug (spoiler alert: this is the first surprise), and seal it with another coat. Allow to dry and repeat to give the paper a good sturdy seal.

Finally, with the mug upside down, use a straw or stick to carefully glob the Martha-Stewart Glow-in-the-Dark Finish around the perimeter of the bottom so that it sort of oozes down the side of the mugs (psst: this is the second surprise). Allow to dry.

Now, wait for it...

Cool, huh? I mean, seriously, that Glow-in-the-Dark Finish is some powerful stuff, no?

One of my most popular tutorials of all time is a set of champagne coupes to which I applied a similar technique to create a lacy bottom, and the number one question on that post is: Can you wash them? Well, I'm so glad you asked. Not only can the Martha Stewart Decoupage products be used on any surface -- including glass, they're dishwasher-safe (and machine washable and appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use...what?!). Oh, and since I'm sure you're wondering, they're also water-based and non-toxic. Winners all around!

All of the great Martha Stewart Crafts products are brought to us by the fine people at Plaid, so be sure to follow along with all their crafty shenanigans on Facebook and Pinterest.

Disclosure: I completed this post as part of a marketing campaign for Martha Stewart Decoupage. As part of the campaign, I received supplies and other compensation. All opinions -- and surprise-makin' -- are my own. Thanks for supporting the sponsors that help keep Fabric Paper Glue goin'!
