Kitchen Lights: DIYing for Idiots

Since I'm sure at least two or three of you are awaiting after shots of my kitchen lighting project with bated breath, I wanted to share a few sort of not-quite-yet-after shots.  I still need to sand my patches and repaint the whole ceiling, but I am super pleased with how the fixtures turned out...definitely the right choice!

A reminder of what we started with:

My Kitchen

I really don't want to rehash all the idiotic details, but just as I had suspected, this project turned out to be a little harder than I hoped it would be and not because it actually was but mostly because Michael and I are idiots.  Seriously.  I cut two completely unnecessary holes in the ceiling and took two completely unnecessary trips to Home Depot to buy a bunch of completely unnecessary crap--screws of every kind, junction boxes of several configurations, a drywall saw, drill bits...blah, blah.  The heart of the problem was the need to move one of the junction boxes a few inches (because the old fixtures were not on the same plane) and unexpected metal studs, but the moral of the story is that slow, steady, and strong win the metal-drilling race.  It took us a good day, a Google search, and a DIY chat room post to learn that.  See, idiots.  Anyway, here's more not-quite-yet-after shots than you could ever hope for...

  4. I don't think you are an idiot. I think you're awesome for attempting a more difficult project by yourselves! The new light looks great, and I think it does make a big impact.

  5. Love the fixtures! As for any idiocy, I think that's called learning life's lessons? Or at least that's what I tell myself.
